The Entomology Collection is intended to challenge the notions of what is beautiful and desirable with what is repulsive and feared. Insects are fascinating, they make up 80% of the species on Earth. There is a long history of insects being used in jewellery, their natural iridescent wing cases often being used as jewels. My degree in Classical Studies lead me to discover both Herodotus and Aristophanes referring to the old men of Athens wearing golden crickets in their hair. Insects also epitomise the mantra of ‘live fast, die young and leave a beautiful corpse’ as their exoskeletons remain and their soft flesh decays within. I have taken creatures that are often hated and feared but once they are transformed into silver and gilded with gold plating and precious stones they become something beautiful.
This gorgeous Gilded Rhino Beetle ring with diamond-encrusted wing case is the perfect adornment for your fingers. This piece consists of a life-sized rhino beetle cast in sterling silver, highlighted with gold plating, garnets and tiny white diamonds. The natural realism continues with the twig detailing around the band, a feature found in all of the rings from the Entomology Collection. This piece stands up as one of the most cherished pieces of the collection.
