Sometimes it is the simplest ideas that are the best and never has this been truer than in the case of BijouxBar by Vivien Frank. It was a fascination for beauty and boho chic that saw BijouxBar designer turn a family tradition for friendship bracelets into a thriving business and with the 60s and 70s influences running through the collections, they are some of the most popular pieces on Boticca’s site. Here we get up close and personal with Simona to understand just why hers is such a success story.
I was born in Switzerland but moved to Montreal, Canada at a very early age. We had a small house in the country, where each day I would go horseback riding and play in the surrounding woods with my friends. It was the perfect childhood fostering my imagination to create a world of it’s own …and my love of cowboy boots.
Later on, I moved to the city and studied creative arts and design at Dawson College. From there I went on to university and finished my degree in Communication and Film studies. My interests have always been in the arts, whether it be design, painting, music or ultimately in filmmaking.
By the time I finished studying, my family had moved back to Switzerland, and so I decided to visit them for one year. I quickly found a job as a film editor in a successful Swiss production company. I fell in love with Switzerland again and decided to move back to Europe. I now live in Zurich with my husband, who is a film producer, and our two children.
It really stems from my love of art. When my son was born I was producing a successful show for television, but decided to give it up to stay at home with him. But it didn’t take too long until I was ready to create something new. Gemstones fascinated me at the time, the vivid color combinations and their sparkle. Bijoux bar was born out of my home while my son was taking his naps, at this time I created lavish boho gemstone necklaces – this was 10 years ago!
Summer holidays by the ocean! Whenever I traveled as a child we’d stroll through the markets, eventually stopping at a stand that sold friendship bracelets. We’d all buy one which bonded us and kept the memories of hot summers present through to fall. It became a tradition that I have happily taken over with my family. I adore the strong and meaningful concept behind such simple idea.
My designs could be described as modern bohemian – I love the look of the late 60s and early 70s. The free expressionism, the music, peace, love and joie de vivre. Flashing forward a few decades, my pieces reflect the feel of the 70s with a modern twist.
These are the names of my children Vivien and Frank. I love the sound of their names combined. A homage to my children so to speak…
My jewelry is very wearable and there is no age limit. I have very young customers and more mature customers who equally enjoy my jewelry. It’s a bit of a style and philosophy to wear stackable friendship modern boho pieces. Each piece is hand made by me, I carefully hand craft each piece and I believe a good aura comes from personally sitting down and making something from beginning to end. I love custom work and am happy to customize the pieces with personalized initials, specific lengths etc. The wish bracelets are inexpensive and make great gifts – so really there is something for everyone.
It comes from my own personal taste. I design what I want to wear, what I do wear and what I’d like to wear.
Actually I started with earrings and my boho gemstone necklaces, and I still have a huge gemstone collection waiting to be revived. Yes, I will be doing more gemstone pieces. I have a gemstone bracelet collection almost ready to go…
Actually, I am always re-creating my actions and each step is a process that I have learned from, so every “mistake” has brought me further.
