Inspiration

This collection of necklaces were inspired by the Ainu tribes of Japan and Russia. There are believed to be less than 100 speakers of the Ainu language, a language which has no system of writing.
Ainu culture was centred around hunting; they believed the bear was sent to them by Kim-un Kamuy (God of bears and mountains) for its meat and hide. After hunting an animal, they would send its spirit back to the spirit world with prayer and ceremony. They believed like the animals, their own souls were immortal.
The women tattooed their mouths and forearms, starting with a small strip above the lip at an early age, spreading to a large perimeter around their mouths the older and wiser they became.
The Ainu people were assimilated into Japanese culture at the turn of the 20th century and there are very few left today. Colonisation and political change were the major factors responsible for the decimation of the Ainu culture.
