Both stripes and plaids are ancient motifs in the history of textiles and weaving, and today we are still in love with these elegant basics. The soft and shifting quality of the stripes in the Color Field series was inspired by the technique of warp painting itself: after painting thin stripes for another series of scarves, I noticed that the edges of those stripes were shifting in a really beautiful way as I wove the cloth. I decided to take that effect and highlight it in a new series by enlarging the stripe until the entire surface area of the scarf became a field of shifting stripes. The simplicity of this motif invited a bright and bold celebration of color as well, and the Color Field series was born.
I personally execute all design and making processes in my Richmond, VA studio: this scarf has been warp-painted, woven, and dyed by hand and is a one-of-a-kind piece. It is woven with medium-weight mercerized cotton (warp) and fine-weight alpaca (weft) to create a comfortably weighted and warm piece without being bulky. This scarf is silky and soft with excellent drape in a luxuriously extra-large and versatile size. Care is simple: wash by hand in a delicate detergent, lay out immediately after washing, and dry flat. Do not wring.
