Laura Lombardi is the New York-born, Chicago based jewelry designer creating from her studio in Fulton Market. Laura’s earliest forays into art came in the form of sculpture and mixed media, not surprising when you evaluate the structure, geometric focus, and fluidity of her jewelry designs. Her academic focus was always aimed at fine arts; it wasn’t until her move to Chicago that Laura first became involved in jewelry design.
Laura’s designs themselves are formed of materials that Laura connects with, most often vintage and deadstock materials. Both her materials and her finished products find her, rather than the other way around. This of course, is due to a practiced and guided hand that seeks out the building blocks of a narrative, and then begins to tell a story. One of her greatest sources of inspiration is travel, which leads to both the physical materials that will later become jewelry, as well as the catalysts and ideas behind each collection. Anyone wearing a piece of Laura Lombardi jewelry is essentially wearing a part of her journey, both literally and figuratively speaking. This constant forward movement is part of what keeps Laura’s designs fresh, with her talent and tendency toward materials and structure keeping each collection consistent with her aesthetic. Never intending to arrive at the professional success she’s found, Laura initially started selling her designs at small events and online, until she was driven to grow her business by consumer response. She moved on to jewelry design full time, allowing herself a more luxurious pace and the time to refine her craft and focus her vision, and the result was her first lookbook and collection. The following season, she participated in a large-scale pop up shop at The Ace Hotel, where she showed her spring ‘11 and fall ‘11 collections. Several months later, she presented her fall ‘11 and spring ‘12 collections at Capsule Trade Show in New York City. Laura has continued to present her work at Capsule New York and Paris, and at a New York City showroom. Each piece is made by hand at Laura’s Fulton Markets studio in Chicago IL.Read less
