Designer interview

Gina Melosi

Gina Melosi’s beautiful, irregular jewelry has very destructive origins – each piece is cast from broken glass. Her Shattered Fragments collection grew from extensive research into body modification. “I want to try to show visually what it seems we cannot always express in words,” Gina has said. “The need for expression through the body for those rituals for which there is no verbal counterpart.” The collection began with jewelry made from glass – a ring made from shards of glass is a particularly striking, if impractical piece. The entire collection invokes the stories that accompany broken glass – was there an accident? A dramatic fight? What led to this glass being broken? The organic shapes of each piece are elegant and edgy, and each jagged edge creates a new level of interest. “In essence, I’m creating found objects,” Gina says. Committed to creating environmentally-friendly products, Gina only uses recycled metals and Fair Trade gemstones in her designs. Each piece has a story to tell – it’s up to you to fill in the details.
