Designer Interview – Susie Morrow

Posted in by

Chatting with designer Susie Morrow is like talking to an old friend as her bubbly and enthusiastic personality simply shines through. Influenced by ancient cultures and mythology, each of her pieces is both carefully created and thought out.

Susie Morrow

Hello Susie, can you please just tell us a little bit more about yourself?

I grew up in a large Anglo Irish family in Newcastle in the north of England. I still live in Northumberland because I love the tranquility, but my job takes me all over the world on a very regular basis, so really, I’m a citizen of the world.

I was a science geek, well before it was trendy to be a nerd. I loved science; still do in
fact and so naturally ended up a scientist when I grew up – specializing in Chemistry.
I worked as a chemist in industry for a while, and then taught chemistry. In the background, I was working to build a software company with my partner, which ultimately we succeeded in doing and we’ve been working in this field for a long time now. I specialize in online identity and technology futures- looking at how human beings interact with technology online and how best to translate our real lives into digital ones.

However, throughout my life, from early childhood, I’ve always been fascinated by fashion and design, probably because my mother had her own dressmaking business and I used to help out in cutting out patterns, etc. I’ve never lost the love of fashion, fabric and accessories and still collect vintage and antique jewelry.

Handpicked by Eva

I’m a big fan of bangles but these really are bangles with a difference. Made with a rough finish to reflect the surface of tree bark and bound together with leather – I can wear these beauties with the confidence that I will be the only girl in town with such unique arm candy.

Style hunting with the experts Wednesday June 8th 2011

Posted in by

Yesterday I spent the afternoon with our Boticca style hunters Chiara and Kiyan at the Liverpool John Moores graduation catwalk show. As I followed them around trying to look as knowledgeable and au fait with emerging talent as them, I decided that if I am to learn how to spot talent, I really do need to ask the experts. So I did, and here’s what they had to say.

A stand that caught our eye

Graduate Fashion Week Day 1

Our Style Hunter Chiara

What do you look for when you are style hunting?

Kiyan: First and foremost, I’m after something unique. Whether it is the designer’s background, the inspirations, the materials or even the techniques used, I’m looking for at least one thing that is completely singular to that designer. Accessories are what add that touch of uniqueness to an outfit so when we’re style hunting, we have to find something that stands out!

Also, I want to be able to feel something when I look at their work: whether it is awe, happiness, shock or even fear, I like accessories that incite a reaction from those who see it (and even by those who wear them). At Boticca, we’re all about pieces with a meaning so we need to find designers and accessories that really have a story to tell and stand for something.

Chiara: I always look for designs that have the power to stimulate the imagination that tell a story by taking you to a certain special little universe.

At the same time, I want the pieces to be suitable for everyday wear and be meaningful in the sense that they are connecting the wearer with themselves, their dreams and thereby with the outside world. That little bit of magic that I believe we all need.

I want people to find on Boticca some unique accessories that they can pair with any outfit and in any style. Accessories that make them feel that they are wearing something unique while feeling comfortable and confident in their everyday practical life.

What is your process?

Kiyan & Chiara: When we come across a designer we like, we meet with them (or chat on the phone or via Skype if they’re abroad) to see their pieces and find out more about them: what is their background, what makes them unique, how involved they are at each step of the design process, where do the materials come from, what kind of quality controls they have in place and pricing. If everything checks out, we then verify the photography as well as the packaging, shipping and customer service level of the designer to ensure that our customers will have a great experience interacting with them pre- and post-purchase. And if all of that meets our criteria, we provide the designer with an account and they can began selling on Boticca!

Are you typically drawn to similar things or do you have different tastes?

Kiyan: I’d like to think we have different tastes. I find Chiara to be a lot more eclectic than I am! J However, when we are style hunting, we both take our own personal tastes out of the equation because our customers are pretty much evenly spread across the world with very diverse tastes. I think that diversity is apparent when you look at our roster of designers.

Chiara: The most fun and stimulating part when we style hunt comes when we both have different ideas about a designer’s work or interpret the work differently. I love finding myself ending up buying and wearing pieces from designers that initially didn’t jump to my eye and likewise, I love when Kiyan does the same!

What type of things do you find yourselves going for each time?

Kiyan: I have to admit, I’m a sucker for really contemporary pieces! I love designers that push the boundaries of imagination and incorporate art into their work. You know, pieces that just get you lost in your thoughts! I’ve also developed a weird hat fetish lately…

Chiara: I have a big fascination for old school metal smiths’ work.

What has been your greatest style hunting moment?

Kiyan: My greatest style hunting moment is definitely when I see the impact we have on a designer who is finally able to find his or her audience and customers. I remember speaking to one designer on the phone a few weeks ago who told me that she was quitting her part-time job to focus full-time on her true love and passion: accessories design. Until joining Boticca, she hadn’t realized that so many people around the world were interested in her work and that lit her creative flame once again. We should all be able to do what we love in life.

Chiara: I think that my first conscious style hunting joy has been when I first came across Boticca when it was still quite “undiscovered” and small, with its “old look” before our public launch last October.

I remember spending hours on my computer being blown away by the selection of around 100 unique designers. In particular, I first was so intrigued by some of Selda Okutan’s rings. Also, that was the first time I came across Suzanna Dai’s exotic and travel-inspired pieces and it was amazing. It felt a bit like jumping onboard the most glamorous carriage on the Oriental Express!

Beauty in Unexpected Places

Posted in by

Can you create something beautiful out of something bizarre?

Beauty that pushes boundaries has long been the inspiration for designers. Just take the Cult of Beauty, the current exhibition at the V&A in London. Exploring Aestheticism, an artistic movement during the late 19th century, its followers sought to create a new kind of art and beauty from the Victorian period, revolutionising art, architecture, interior design and modes of dress. Displaying extraordinary works by William Morris, Aubrey Beardsley and Oscar Wilde it’s inspiring to see how the group dared to create out-of-this world pieces that challenged the notion of what was considered ‘beautiful’ at the time.

Over in New York, the Alexander McQueen exhibition ‘Savage Beauty’, showing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art works on the same theme, that designers challenging the boundaries of conventional beauty can create something spectacular. McQueen’s surreal designs always shocked when they came out on the catwalk, but over time they have become revered as some of the greatest designs in fashion history.

Today, designers like Miuccia Prada are flying the flag for original design, and thinking outside the box. The designer’s designer, she’s always the first to dare to be different, and where she leads, other designers often follow. She’s the woman who got us wearing kitten heels, block heeled platforms, and nylon backpacks, who designed skirts for men, made geeky, librarian chic cool and sludgy colours like mustard and brown must-haves. It’s no different this season, with the bold striped dresses, quirky shaped specs and fruit jewelry she sent down the runway.

These designer and artists all find beauty in unexpected places – so we’re championing unique design this week. Here are a few pieces that we think challenge conventional style, and will make your look completely unique:

Taking the term ‘key ring’ and spinning it on its head, Elena Estuan has transformed an ordinary key fob into an unusual conversation piece – ‘UFO ring’ is an apt name!

Like a precious jewel, this glittering gold ceramic bow tie is a feminine spin on a typically male accessory. Worn with a strapless dress or jumpsuit, it channels the Studio 54/Seventies Disco trend seen on the Spring catwalks in a unique way.

Ever got bored of your everyday bag? The Marie Bag can be worn in endless ways – keep the cute printed lining in, take it out for a minimal look, wear as a tote or with a shoulder strap…change it up depending on your mood (or outfit).

This ring from Jungyun Yoon is an homage to true romance. Inspired by a Korean singer who wrote a song about a sunburn mark left from a ring that reminded him of a past love, the designer created her own version – a ring with a hidden message inside, that leaves an imprint on the wearer’s hand. That’s one way to make an impression on a loved one!

Fresh Talent Alert – Arnoldo][Battois

Posted in by

We’re so excited to welcome design duo Silvano Arnoldo and Massimiliano Battois, aka Arnoldo][Battois, to the Boticca community.

The pair hails from the most fascinating lagoon city there is: Venice. The city's strong influence can be found in their bags from symbols of far worlds, Marco Polo's travels and the glory days of La Serenissima.

Games of light and drapings  associated with a contemporary approach to classic bag sculpture and architecture make each of these beauties a piece of art. The final product is very weareable and the pieces complement the body amazingly in absolute freedom.

Allow Silvano and Massimiliano to help you rediscover the past in order to redesign the future!

Be Bold!

Posted in by

It may still be January, with the last dregs of the sales still be in the shops, but at Boticca we’re bored with our winter wardrobes and aching to try out a fresh new look for Spring. And after a winter of pared-back minimalism, this Spring/Summer is the season to make a statement.

Way back in September, designers sent some daring looks down the catwalks – from acid brights and colour blocking at Jil Sander and Calvin Klein, to the crazy print and patterns at Prada and Stella McCartney (thick stripes and tropical fruit prints anyone?). The 70s are also set to be a huge trend this season – with wide legged flares, chunky platforms and strong shades of mustard on the menu. We love a unique look, but these trends aren’t for the faint-hearted!

Now that designers have decided to embrace bold over boring, it seems like experimentation is in the air. Two of the most exciting art exhibitions this year – a huge Joan Miro retrospective at the Tate Modern, London and Alexander McQueen, Savage Beauty at the Metropolitan Museum of New York – are all about the bold and the beautiful.

Feeling a bit like a fashion wallflower? Well you can still inject some fresh life into your look without looking like a catwalk copy. Spring is the perfect time to experiment with a new look – and the easiest way to do it is with some ‘out there’ accessories. Here are some of our favourite bold pieces on Boticca.

Jungeeeun, Drippings Big Yellow Quartz

Hailing from South Korea, Jungeeeun’s main inspiration is ‘fun’ – which translates into some really quirky jewelry! We love her latest collection for its surreal pieces inspired by melting candle wax – like this unusual pendant!

World of Christina, World’s Collide Super Y Glove

Why plump for boring mittens when you could slip on these rainbow-hued gloves? Created by an ex-botanical artist, this eye-popping patchwork of patterns really caught our eye – and totally channel Miucca Prada’s eclectic print mash up. We love that they are handmade in leather, so are super soft to the touch.

Arata Fuchi, Black Ball Ring with Fine Gold Studs

If you usually go for simple, understated jewelry, or pretty girl pieces, toughen up with this chic ring in oxidized silver and fine gold. The oversized ball makes this ring really stand out, but the flecks of gold make it elegant.

Rosso Diesis, 007-scaramantichorn

An out-there name, and an out-there design – we adore this pendant! Italian’s are known for their outlandish take on glamour – and we think this necklace adds just that to an outfit. Made using traditional techniques from Naples, the stripy design and unusual shape of the necklace would look fresh with a strapless dress.
