4 top tips for creating a red carpet look

Posted in by

Ever wondered how celebrities look so darn good on the red carpet? Luckily Boticca has the answer. With just a few simple steps you can be up there in the style stakes with the A list.

1. One lady who knows red carpet style is Joan Rivers,  commentating on red carpet events for decades now, Joan advises to wear a lot of big jewelry. Citing red carpet style as ‘your turn to bring out your inner princess,’ if you need inspiration look no further than jewelry magpie and fashion drama queen Jennifer Lopez.

We like Nikki Baker’s Reversible Diamond Earrings and Paula Mendoza’s Chivor Necklace.

2. Like the girl guides say, be prepared. Want to know how the A list look so calm and poised? They are prepared for every eventuality from make-up meltdowns to sore feet. For this there is no finer way to keep your style emergency essentials safe than with a chic clutch. We recommend Edith Silver Glitter by Wilbur&Gussie or celebrity fave Darren Hakim and her Le Icon Slate Croc Clutch.

3. Stand out from the crowd. It might sound simple enough but the help of even the smallest accessory can give you an essential style leg up. We love Lizzie McQuade’s Triomphe headband or Sarah Home’s Pheasant Fascinator III

4. Last but most certainly not least – be yourself. Nothing will make you feel more comfortable during a big event than having a signature piece with you. For the perfect example, look to none other than Nicole Richie and her initial necklace – for a more unique version try Jessica de Lotz’s Personalised Hand Stamped Wax Seal Necklace.

70s Rediscovered

Posted in by

As we hit mid-summer, one fashion trend that looks set to continue well after our bikinis and suntan lotions have been packed away for another year is the 70’s revival. Taking our cue from the catwalks of Tory Burch, Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs and Chris Benz, the influence of this exciting and historical decade looks set to run and run.

While many of us may not have actually visited the famous hangout ‘Studio 54,’ that doesn’t stop most of us hankering after a little 70’s magic in our wardrobes.

So unless David Bowie was the first live concert you attended or if you are lucky enough to have parents who kept all those fantastic ensembles, in order to keep up with one of this summer’s hottest fashion trends, it’s time to take a trip back in fashion time and take an intensive course on this ever-present inspiration.

The 70’s were a time of ABBA, hippies, lava lamps, the famous Mohawk haircut, Space Invaders video game and of course time-enduring fashion. From bell-bottoms, fringed just about everything to the ubitiquous denim mini-skirt, it seems something about that era just jarred and now, over 30 years later, it’s influence rages on. So flash forward to 2011 and the latest 70’s revival. This time around we look destined not to embrace the trend head-on, merely skirt around the edges. Patterns are less vivid; colors are more muted, in short, whereas before where impact reigned supreme, this summer it’s time for sophisticated seventies.

So if you’re looking to get a piece of this vintage glam in your wardrobe, Boticca has compiled the perfect how-to seventies guide. Ready? Read on ….

Blame it on the boogie. The 70’s were all about disco fever so look for accessories with a disco edge. Silks, metallics, perspex and sequins are what to watch out for. Try the Gold Group Triangle necklace by Rebecca Boatfield or An Unkindness of Black Ravens by Sarah Home perspex necklace, or be seduced by the true disco vibe of the Cheri beaded purse by blackfrangipani.

Go for boho. When it comes to accessories, it’s time to embrace your inner modern hippie and take a style trip to the prairie. Think bold pendants, gold hoop earings, feather covered earings and turquoise silver bracelets for a look that says more here I am than look at me, this is the 70’s we are talking about, not the 80’s, it’s all about understated chic. Sound good? Then take a look at Anni Jurgenson’s feathered ear cuff, Bita Pourtavoosi’s hammered gold hoops, the Hespera Necklace by Gemma Redux or the Rome cuff by Suzanna Dai.

Learn to love leather. The 70’s saw a veritable love affair with all things leather and this 2011 version is certainly no different. Look to leather beaded bracelets, long leather pendants and leather women’s tote bags galore.  The Leila bag by ana faye will see you effortlessly from day to night and the Turquoise Bracelet in Gold Coated Silver by toosis brilliantly balances both the leather and turquoise trend in one.

Belt it up. Nothing screams 70’s quite like a belt, if ever there was an era for the belt it was then. Keeping true to the whole vibe of the trend, look for belts in a vibrant hue, ideally with sequin detail or embellishment. The crystal Bow Belt by Poupee Couture excellently nails this trend on the head.

Pile it on. The 70’s were the start of the era of excess. So when it comes to jewelry, the general rule of thumb is; the more the better.

The Round-Up: Week of Nov 8th

Posted in by

The Round-Up is Boticca’s weekly summary of new designers, new pieces we love as well as happenings on our website and around our community.

New designers

Clementine James from Little Glass Clementine (London, UK): Clementine is a self-taught designer who we discovered sporting one of her necklaces in the London Tube. She specializes in creating absolutely stunning statement necklaces using collected treasures, discarded objects and precious gems.

Fiona Sheeran from Madam Meme (New York, USA): Fiona is an Australian designer who likes to create adjustable, statement pieces. What you get is a range that is feminine, functional and fitting for any occasion.

Natalie de Angelis from KAHENA (Saint Nazaire, France): When we first met Natalie at the PURE London conference last summer, we were immediately drawn towards her outgoing and energetic personality. And it takes a bold designer to bring back gaiters which she does oh-so-beautifully by adding a modern twist.

Marta Chojnacka from Manolo (London, UK): Marta is a designer who studied painting and drawing in her native homeland of Poland before moving to London. Her education is apparent in her unique line of brooches (called “Las Chicas de Manolo”) inspired by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Iulia Stanescu (Bucharest, Romania): Iulia specializes in functional clutch bags that can be worn in a multitude of ways. She considers herself “a joyful activator” and this sense of happiness is apparent throughout her World of Wonderful collection.

Jerome Olivet (Paris, France): This Frenchman is a jack of all trades when it comes to design: architect, industrial designer and professor of prospective design. His work can be found in modern art museums around the world. He now brings us his recently launched line of highly functional, luxurious bags for the modern-day urban warrior.

5 New Pieces We Love

1. SOL KEY earrings by Arosha Luigi Taglia. Why we love it: Classy, delicate, and unique. Impossible not to love these earrings all year round.

2. World of Wonderful clutch by Julia Stanescu. Why we love it: Minimalistic, unconventional, and big enough to be practical.

3. Francesca brooch by Manolo. Why we love it: Francesca loves luxury, truffles, champagne, caviar, prawns and lobsters. And we love her!

4. Enjoy the Silence… ring by Fevi Reyes. Why we love it: Because it’s from Fevi’s Discoteca collection! Chunky and funky!

5. Lola necklace by Madam Meme. Why we love it: We love the idea of playing around with jewelry. This necklace can be worn in three different ways… at least!

WOW! Piece of the Week
