The Metalists

Posted in by

The 2012 Olympics are kicking off in our hometown, London, and while we aren’t the sportiest crowd, we’re still getting into the Olympic spirit. Olympians receive gold, silver and bronze medals, but you don’t have to be an athlete to get your hands on some of your own – metal, that is. Our designers work with a variety of metals to create exquisite, original pieces, so we spoke to them to find out why they favor these magic metals.

Designer Interview – Susie Morrow

Posted in by

Chatting with designer Susie Morrow is like talking to an old friend as her bubbly and enthusiastic personality simply shines through. Influenced by ancient cultures and mythology, each of her pieces is both carefully created and thought out.

Susie Morrow

Hello Susie, can you please just tell us a little bit more about yourself?

I grew up in a large Anglo Irish family in Newcastle in the north of England. I still live in Northumberland because I love the tranquility, but my job takes me all over the world on a very regular basis, so really, I’m a citizen of the world.

I was a science geek, well before it was trendy to be a nerd. I loved science; still do in
fact and so naturally ended up a scientist when I grew up – specializing in Chemistry.
I worked as a chemist in industry for a while, and then taught chemistry. In the background, I was working to build a software company with my partner, which ultimately we succeeded in doing and we’ve been working in this field for a long time now. I specialize in online identity and technology futures- looking at how human beings interact with technology online and how best to translate our real lives into digital ones.

However, throughout my life, from early childhood, I’ve always been fascinated by fashion and design, probably because my mother had her own dressmaking business and I used to help out in cutting out patterns, etc. I’ve never lost the love of fashion, fabric and accessories and still collect vintage and antique jewelry.

Fresh Talent Alert – Elena Estaun, deMaglie, Blind Spot Jewellery

Posted in by

Elena Estaun

Barcelona native Elena Estaun creates jewelry with an adventurous wearer in mind and a nod to the past. She creates unique rings from vintage keys, mostly found in NYC, from the 1950s era.

We particularly love this key from the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. Imagine what stories this ring would tell if it could speak…

…and from a time when hotel rooms still had metal keys.

We’re intrigued by the key ring with a crack. With part of the face bathed in gold, there’s a precious twist to this stylish, unique piece of wearable art.

deMaglie

The imagination and detail of deMaglie’s collection of men’s jewelry is captivating, all of which is handmade in Milan.

Inspired by timeless legends and heroes of the past, references are precise in these designs: ornaments, sceptres and crowns.

An aura of freedom and power flows through each deMaglie’s designs, which are created with the idea of men as protagonists of an extraordinary voyage and destined for men ready for an adventure in the present day.

And as an adventurous lifestyle often runs us into risk, here is his little treat for broken hearted heroes. We love how deMaglie’s designs are meant to stir an imagination of heroic determination, veiling a childhood smile.

Blind Spot Jewellery

Genial Janos is the reigning Hungarian talent at Boticca.

Here is his stunning Mariana Trench ring.

“Poison ring, inspired by the sea. Like most of my jewellery it is pressure proof up to 6.8 miles depth. The “triger” of the poison ring lies on the next finger, so you can open it without anyone noticing it…”

Isn’t it amazingly diabolic?

And here is a work in progress of one of his pieces, which gives a sense of Janos’ very unique and intimate relationship with the metals he uses.

“Iron jewellery needs care, just like silver does. Not being a precious metal it is more reactive with the environment and with you. If you get ill it will leave a dark mark on your finger again, probably because of the changed acidity of the skin or your jewel worrying for you. When you swim in the sea the same thing happens and you must rinse it with fresh water and wipe it immediately. I think it is nice to live together with such a strong and sensitive metal.”
