Mystery Date hat by Lisa Battaglia

New York-based milliner Lisa Battaglia is one of many people affected by Hurricane Sandy. Thankfully, Lisa made it through the storm, but she witnessed much of the destruction firsthand, so she’d like to do something to help.

“I was deeply moved by the destruction of homes and people’s lively possessions right in my own neighborhood,” Lisa says. It is hard to imagine what these people must be going through now as they try to rebuild their lives. My heart goes out to all of these people affected.”

From now until Nov. 23rd, Lisa will donate 10 percent of her sales to the American Red Cross to support victims of Hurricane Sandy. Click here to see her collection.

The Perfect Winter Hat

Brown wool hat by Lisa Battaglia

Cocoa Puff hat by Lisa Battaglia

Millinery has become a rather rare art form, one that milliner Lisa Battaglia still practices with passion. She assembles each hat in her New York City studio using her own free-form technique. Lisa tends not to plan her hats, preferring to let the process itself inspire her. Thus, every single hat is unique. Take this cute Cocoa Puff riding hat – wool traps heat in and the little brim saves skin from the strong winter sun. It’s a perfect little piece, don’t you think?

Fresh Talent Alert – August 24th

Another week, another influx of creative and unique designers.

Meckela

The Israel-based bag line Meckela is truly a family affair. Sisters Ofir (also known as Meck) and Ela founded the brand after reconnecting with their creativity on a trip through Asia. The line is something of a tribute to the women in their family, who the sisters describe as “strong and gentle, assertive and feminine, careerist and family-oriented.” These inspiring women took a group jaunt through Europe before they settled into married life, and it is this trip that inspired the Meckela aesthetic: Beautiful, understated and classic.

 Lisa Battaglia

Milliner Lisa Battaglia believes that a hat can completely transform any look. That’s why she creates hats that turn traditional styles on their heads (so to speak). Lisa makes each hat by hand, sculpting the materials just so for a piece that is completely original. Inspired by memories and iconic images, Lisa calls her aesthetic “modern vintage.” Her pieces are creative, modern nods to a time when hats were essential accessories, so we find this description quite fitting.
