Native American Style

Posted in by

The major Fashion weeks around the world are finally over, and the hottest trend that we’ll all be working come Fall/Winter? A Native American influenced look.

Designers from New York to London were working South by Southwest style, looking to Native American culture for inspiration. In New York, Proenza Schouler’s designers were inspired by a road trip across the Wild West, where they collected Native American blankets and textiles, and interpreted them into their own wool printed garments.

Elsewhere designers added touches of Native American style. Rodarte had Brit shoe designer Nicholas Kirkwood create little booties on a Native theme, decorated with beaded patterns Diane von Furstenberg’s ‘American Legend’ show took Millicent Rogers as her muse – who had a thing for mixing Native American pieces with her Rodeo wear. And Band of Outsiders showed preppy collegiate style outfits mixed with wool blanket coats and Native inspired graphic prints.

It wasn’t just American designers looking to their heartland – in London, Matthew Williamson, the king of Boho chic, used prints found in Native American tribes, and Isabel Marant sent her models down the Parisian runway dripping in suede fringing.

This may be next winter’s key look, but why wait till then? With all the beading, fringing, feathers and punchy prints, we think Native American style accessories will work perfectly for Spring and Summer – adding an earthy, natural and boho edge to summer dressing. The key is to add subtle Native American influences. Here are your essentials for looking as stunning as Pocahontas…

Fringing

One of the easiest ways to work Navajo style into your wardrobe, fringing conjures up images of hippie chic girls on holiday and rock stars on tour. Seen lining thigh high boots in Isabel Marant’s collection, go for more low key fringing for day wear. This lamb leather cross body bag by Julie K has two stands of fringing and looks like it was made for a summer music festival. If you can’t wait until the weather warms up, these fringed gloves from World of Christina will keep you toasty from any Spring chill, and will be bang on trend come Fall.

Feathers

Play on the drama of big American Indian headdresses, by adding some plumes to your wardrobe. This exotic and punky ear cuff from Anni Jurgenson can be easily clipped onto your ear – and will really ruffle some feathers if worn with short hair or a sleek updo.

A Saddle Bag

You might not be trekking across the desert in a wagon, but this roomy leather Waitz Bag is the perfect companion for adventurous girls – take it on a road trip or action-packed city break. Leather and hard-wearing suede are essentials for a wild west look, so look out for bags in these materials.

Beading

Intricate beading in bright colours will liven up any Spring outfit. A boho beaded necklace – like this pendant by Toujours Toi – looks chic paired with a plain white t-shirt or shirt for the office, and tank and denim cut-offs on holiday. For something a little more subtle, try this Navajo bracelet, or why not pair beading with a rugged leather belt? This handcrafted Waitz number has all the hallmarks of southwestern style – turquoise stones, silver studs, wood and silver detailing, cowhair and leather patches. Wear with a pair of jeans for day, or toughen up a floaty skirt or dress.
