Another week, another influx of creative and unique designers.

Byrogue Designs

Byrogue is a London-based design studio focused on creating unique, stylish statement pieces. Drawing inspiration from their East London surroundings, Byrogue designs bold rings and knuckle-dusters that are a delightful mix of chic and edgy. Clean lines and graphic shapes adorn these rings, along with gentle touches of texture like suede and pearls. Byrogue rings have already been spotted on celebrities such as Jessie J and Keri Hilson.

Jules Sainte Rose

From riding horses to designing interiors to traveling, a host of experiences inspired Jules Sainte Rose to take up her craft. Her interest in saddlery led her to experiment with leather and create a collection of original handbags. Her Little Crab bags are sweet and quirky, while her totes are wardrobe staples. Available in soft lambskin and rich colors, each Jules Sainte Rose bag is a treat.

ZUR Artbags

ZÜR Artbags is based in Colombia. Designers Catalina Freiye and Juliana Azcárate launched the brand with the intention of creating a line of sophisticated, stylish accessories that also contribute to their local economy. Artisans from tribes across Colombia hand-weave the original patterned fabrics that are featured on many of the bags. These fabrics are meticulously handmade and take days or weeks to complete, so each bag is truly made with love.

The Agenda: August 30th

Find out what’s in the diary this week.

Art: Modigliani, Soutine et l’Aventure de Montparnasse
Jonas Netter’s collection is on display at the Pinacothèque in Paris. The collection features several previously unseen Modigliani paintings, along with works by Soutine, Valadon, Kisling and more. This is your last chance to see it – the exhibit will close September 9.
Pinacoth
èque de Paris, Paris, France. Through Sept. 9.

Books: Leonardo and The Last Supper by Ross King
Da Vinci’s Last Supper is among the world’s most famous works of art, but it turns out it was something of an experiment for unreliable Leonardo – the piece was his first fresco. King chronicles the creation of this fresco, from the tumultuous events that surrounded da Vinci to the model who posed as Jesus Christ himself.
Available from Aug. 30 in bookshops everywhere.

Music: My Head Is an Animal, Of Monsters and Men
Those of us in London have had to wait months for the first outing from the Icelandic band (the album was released in 2011 in Iceland). It’s nearly impossible to get through the album without joining in the band’s infectious joy. This is pop, but it’s quality pop, with old-fashioned instruments and melodic voices and thankfully, no discernible Auto-Tune.
Of Monsters and Men, My Head Is an Animal, is on sale now.

Film: Shadow Dancer
Andrea Riseborough stars as Belfast woman who gets caught between her IRA sympathies and MI5. Riseborough’s would-be terrorist Colette McVeigh is caught attempting to bomb London’s Tube, then forced to choose between prison and a life as an informant for MI5. The thriller also stars Clive Owen and Gillian Anderson.

Check your local cinema for show times.

Dream Event: Venice Film Festival
Sadly, we won’t be working from this year’s Venice Film Festival, but we can dream. This year, buzzed-about films include Mira Nair’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist, based on Mohsin Hamid’s novel of the same name, and The Master by Paul Thomas Anderson. Watch out for another major Venice film Wadjda. This is the first film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, directed by Haifaa al-Mansoor, the country’s first female filmmaker to take the international stage.
Venice Film Festival, Venice, Italy. Aug. 29-Sept. 8.

Another week, another influx of creative and unique designers.

Meckela

The Israel-based bag line Meckela is truly a family affair. Sisters Ofir (also known as Meck) and Ela founded the brand after reconnecting with their creativity on a trip through Asia. The line is something of a tribute to the women in their family, who the sisters describe as “strong and gentle, assertive and feminine, careerist and family-oriented.” These inspiring women took a group jaunt through Europe before they settled into married life, and it is this trip that inspired the Meckela aesthetic: Beautiful, understated and classic.

 Lisa Battaglia

Milliner Lisa Battaglia believes that a hat can completely transform any look. That’s why she creates hats that turn traditional styles on their heads (so to speak). Lisa makes each hat by hand, sculpting the materials just so for a piece that is completely original. Inspired by memories and iconic images, Lisa calls her aesthetic “modern vintage.” Her pieces are creative, modern nods to a time when hats were essential accessories, so we find this description quite fitting.
