Happy New Year from the Boticca Team!

Posted in by

We want to wish you a happy 2011 from our team and our designers from around the world! Wherever you are on New Year’s Eve, we hope you have a wonderful start to the New Year and that it brings you everything you have wished for.

And whatever you’re doing December 31st, make sure you see in the New Year in style. We think every girl deserves to feel beautiful on this night of champagne and kisses as the clock strikes twelve. Whether you’re heading out to a super cool club or packed party, enjoying an intimate dinner or drinks do, or just spending New Year’s on the sofa with your nearest and dearest, we’ve picked knockout pieces from our beloved designers around the world guaranteed to to bring in the New Year with a bang.

For a Chic Cocktail Party: Alexandria Button Earring, Suzanna Dai

Suzanna Dai specializes in jewelry and accessories inspired by old-world travel and vintage glamour. These exquisite earrings evoke ‘Mad Men’ era glamour – making them perfect for a cocktail party or decadent dinner party. Made in rhinestones and gold metal wire, we’d pair these with an elegant updo and a sixties style shift – accessorize with a champagne cocktail.

For a Girly Night Out: Tinker Blue Clutch, Wilbur & Gussie

Founded by school friends Lucy Lyons and Brett Tyne (and named after their pets) the Wilbur & Gussie team know how to make a bag for a fun night out. With defining features such as jewel brooch fastenings and eye-popping prints, their clutches are always glam and girly, but we think this hand-sewn satin clutch fits the bill for New Year’s. In a deep blue or pretty purple, the sequin detail will add plenty of sparkle to your outfit – pair with your dancing shoes and a flirty frock, and you’re dancefloor ready. The bag is just big enough to stash New Years essential – like a camera!

For Dinner and Dancing: Ruiz Necklace, Paula Mendoza

Got two places to be tonight? Make your outfit work with your jam packed social calendar. This boho necklace, made by Columbian born designer Paula Mendoza, features 3 raw emeralds (from her birthplace, naturally) surrounded by gold. Wear it as a necklace to a dressy dinner, and then when you’re ready to hit the dance floor, adjust the length and make it into a super cool belt.

For an Intimate Night In, Liz Bracelet, Gemma Redux

Who says you have to go out for a knockout New Years? There’s nothing better than spending the evening simply with the ones you love. For a relaxed dinner or get-together with family and friends, this eye-catching bracelet is edgy but not over the top. Loved by fashion editors and various A listers, Gemma Redux designs are hot property, and guaranteed to get you loads of ‘Where did you get that’s on the night.

Happy New Year!

January Gift Ideas

Posted in by

We think January birthdays get a pretty raw deal. Who can celebrate or stomach a slice of cake after the excesses of the holiday season? Most of us are feeling pretty partied out –and even the biggest social butterflies have swapped tequila shots for wheatgrass, hogging the dancefloor to hitting the gym. But even if you can’t be the life and soul of their party, you can still make it up to them with a meaningful gift.

So we present our pick of presents guaranteed to brighten their birthday, and kick off their year in style.

The Round-Up: Week of Dec 13th

Posted in by

The Round-Up is Boticca’s weekly summary of new designers, new pieces we love as well as happenings on our website and around our community.

New designers

Simona Cassai and Marta Saletti of LedaOtto (Arezzo, Italy): This Italian designing duo proves that inspirations can come from anywhere! Their jewelry designs are based on the blueprints of famous historical buildings and monuments such as Saint Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow or the Castel del Monte in Italy.

Square Lust (Moscow, Russia): Square Lust is a brand of fabulous silk scarves designed by artists Artaksiniya and Fear Konstruktor (who prefer to go by their artistic names). The scarves are characterized by unique, enchanting patterns and to make things better, the pieces are all one-of-a-kind and never reproduced.

Bastian Oppermann of AndTie (Copenhagen, Denmark): “Established on a Friday” by Bastian and a group of friends, AndTie is an innovative brand and concept that has created a unique combination of a scarf and a tie, called the AndTie (of course!).

Morgan Mallett of DESIGN + CONQUER (Calgary, Canada): Drawing inspirations from 1980s sci-fi movies to pretty much everything she finds riveting, Morgan designs are eclectic, organic and idiosyncratically charming. Furthermore, all the pieces in her collection are handmade from custom-fabricated plastic polymers.

5 New Pieces We Love

1. Long Twisted Silver earrings by Larissa Landinez. Why we love them: When the delicacy of a pearl meets the strength of metals, this is where Larissa showcases her talent.

2. Bi-color Slender ring by Arata Fuchi. Why we love it: For those with a more meditative sense of fashion, how can you not fall in love with this slender ring?

3. Castel del Monte bracelet by LedaOtto. Why we love it: this bracelet is based on the blueprint of the famous Castel del Monte 13th century castle in the Apulia region of Italy.

4. Two-Fingered Gold Plated Snake ring by Aiyna Sing. Why we love it: This two-fingered snake ring is perfect for a chic look, with a hint of intrigue and mystique.

5. Dancing Birds Silk scarf by Krista R. Why we love it: the dreamlike pattern and if you listen closely, you’ll hear the murmur of the magical birds.

Last Minute Meaningful Gifts

Posted in by

Panic buying presents? Missed a few people off your gift list? Forget that mad store dash on Christmas Eve – Boticca is here to help.

We’ve all unwrapped a ‘panic present’ – a rash purchase that in no way reflects you or your tastes. A smelly box of soaps? An obscure kitchen appliance? A pair of slippers in the wrong size? We’ve had them all. So to put a stop to toxic gifts, we’ve made a list of last minute presents that prove you don’t have to go shopping early to find a thoughtful gift.

Hand-picked from our community of designers, each piece is truly unique and has an interesting back story behind it – meaning you’ll stand out as the star gifter under the Christmas tree.

So sit back with a glass of mulled wine, and shop from your sofa – we’ve got last minute gifts covered.

The Gift: Arosha RA Egyptian Earrings

The Story: An Italian transplanted to Israel, Arosha Luigi Taglia is an artist and designer creating sculptural jewelry with a hint of spirituality. Fascinated by ancient cultures and mythologies, Arosha looked at iconography of the Ancient Egyptian sun God, Ra, to create this piece. Despite the historic influences, these earrings are fresh and modern, made of 9 carat gold, clear zircon and freshwater pearls. Simple and elegant, these make a gorgeous gift for Mom.

The Gift: Mei Vintage Ashley Shoulder Bag

The Story: Forget splashing out on the latest ‘It bag’- buy a best friend or sister a convertible clutch. Designer Alice Huang hails from Los Angeles and Asia, a bi-cultural upbringing that’s translated into a unique design style. Her limited edition bags are a cultural melting pot of influences – crafted in vintage Kimono fabrics, but in modern styles made for a night out in Manhattan. With a love for vintage textiles, Alice always uses reclaimed or recycled materials for her bags, and makes them by hand in California – meaning no bag is the same, and each fabric pattern is limited edition. This unique bag is pretty AND practical – the handle is removable so it can be converted into a clutch once night falls.

The Gift: Chic Jewel Couture Gold Age Cuff

The Story: You won’t believe it, but jewelry designer Melanie Falvey is completely self-taught. Made with found treasures and precious metals, gems, silks and brocades, her hand crafted collections can be found in exclusive boutiques around the world. What we love about Melanie is that no collection is the same – leading to some truly original designs. Inspiration for this cool cuff came from some research she was doing into primitive jewelry techniques. She came across some of the first jewelry pieces ever found (artifacts from Spain dating back to 40,000 BC) and decided to make her own Paleolithic style piece – using only the most basic tools as the first crafters would have done! The result is this elegant cuff – available in silver or gold, it’s a gift that’s bound to make a statement.

The Gift: Eastern Mystic Jewellery Sarojini Janya Necklace

The Story: Sonal Talgeri-Bhaskaran was in the throes of a highly pressured banking career when the sudden loss of her father made her rethink her priorities, and yearn for a creative escape. Swapping Goldman Sachs for statement jewelry, she taught herself how to design, and launched Eastern Mystic in 2009. Drawing strongly on her Indian heritage in her designs, her Indali collection embraces the strong women who shaped India’s past. This Sarokini Janya necklace may look delicate, but it celebrates empowerment and beauty, with its  blend of fragile gold vermeil, pretty pink opal and tough onyx gems. Give to a girlfriend to ‘unleash the warrior princess within’!

The Round-Up: Week of Dec 6th

Posted in by

The Round-Up is Boticca’s weekly summary of new designers, new pieces we love as well as happenings on our website and around our community.

New designers

Giulia Landini of Madame Framboise (Milano, Italy): Hailing from the Italian capital of fashion, Giulia has recently launched a fabulous line of hair accessories and turbans inspired by fairy tales and the glamour of the early 20th century. Her pieces are entirely handmade in Italy and as she says, “gives you a feeling between child-like fantasies and grandma’s blanket-box”.

La Diosa (London, United Kingdom): La Diosa (Spanish for “goddess”) is the brainchild of London-based duo Natasha Faith and Semhal Zemikael. It is after traveling to Mexico and training with a small community of designers that they found the inspiration for La Diosa: bold, striking yet elegant jewelry for the every day goddess.

Carla Smiley of Orno Jewelry (New York, USA): Having studied architecture, Carla draws inspiration from geometrical patterns found in Moorish architecture to create her line of jewelry called Orno (which is Latin root for the word ornament).

Alicia Marilyn (New York, USA): As a professional actress, Alicia was fortunate to work with many stylists and develop an appreciation for great design. After studying design for many years as an impassioned hobby, Alicia finally began to create her own pieces. The result? A unique mix of class and elegance infused with contemporary design.

Guido La Puca of Rosso Diesis (Napoli, Italy): Guido was discovered by one of our style hunters during a trip to his beautiful city on the Amalfi coast. Using a material of his own creation (by blending ivory and nacreous shavings), Guido makes wonderful, colorful, unique pendants mostly in sinuous shapes that are sure to get you noticed.

5 New Pieces We Love

1. Headband by Madame Framboise. Why we love it: because it takes us back to the 1930s! (not that we were around back then… but you know what we mean!)

2. Lady of Elche earrings by Chic Jewel Couture. Why we love them: This archeological inspired piece (and collection!) never seems to stop fascinating our traveling spirit.

3. Swan ring by Aiyna Singh. Why we love it: Unlike the little duckling who grew up to be a swan, this swan was always gorgeous in silver but has now turned up in a stunning gold version.

4. Charlie the Dino reversible city tote by ZH Collection. Why we love it: the funky patterns that help us brighten up the monotony of everyday life!

5. Acqua neckpiece by Krista R. Why we love it: it’s infinite gracefulness of course!

WOW! Piece of the Week

Hotel Brooch (Daylight) by Selda Okutan. Why: if the piece itself is not cool enough for you, then how about the mechanism that allows the window cleaners to go up and down?

Gift of the Week

Word Stix Necklaces by Julie Tuton. Why: This is definitely a cute gift and since custom wording is also available, you can personalize it too!
